To say that the basketball season is important at LCHS is the understatement of the year. Though most Americans are taught that there are four seasons: spring, summer, fall, winter, in Lustre there are three seasons: spring seeding, summer harvest and BASKETBALL. Basketball leagues begin in 5th grade called Jamboree, then Junior high and the most watched, High school ball. Basketball often is a calling card for students who attend LCHS from outside the community. Even though LCHS is a C District school, the smallest of school sizes, the energy and enthusiasm in “the Lion’s Den” on game night will rival a AA school crowd.

Basketball practice officially started November 19th. To kick off the season in the beginning of December, LCHS hosts a Blue/White Scrimmage. The girls played first, the Lustre Lady Lions team was divided into two teams. One team wearing blue jerseys, the other wearing white. Among the dorm students, we had a girl on the blue and the white teams so we cheered both ways. It is exciting to see how the different kids play their basketball game. The boy’s game followed the girls. With ten boys playing, there were no substitute players. On the boys team, the dorm features three ball players. Many community people come out for basketball even if they do not have a child playing. It is the social season of the year!
