Weather folklore says, ‘March comes in like a lion, it will go out like a lamb.’  March weather this year has been a continuation of January and February snow storms and cold temperatures.  An ongoing joke on social media says that days in March are really “January 91, 92, or 93!”  Even though the Spring solstice landed on March 20, we didn’t see any signs pointing to the end of our winter weather.  The dorm students began to despair of ever seeing nice or even temperate weather before the end of school in May.  Cabin fever is a reality, people!

On Saturday I decided to get the students out of the dorm to drift jump.  Never heard of it?  Well, its a thing to do here where the wind blows snow into drifts of more than 6 feet.  In this climate we have a variety of outfits and depend heavily on layering clothes:  t-shirt, sweatshirt, vest, overalls, jeans, leggings, snow pants, hats, gloves, mittens, scarves, snow boots, wool socks, and more!  Not many of the kids had the proper snow clothes.  (If you are planning to come to LCHS, prepare yourself well for this cold climate!)  Several students borrowed hats and gloves.  Thankfully, the lack of proper dress attire did not hinder these kids from having a wonderful time.

I wasn’t sure if this activity was going to be fun or a flop.  We who are used to snow don’t let it dampen our creativity, but see it as an opportunity for new sports.  Thanks to good sportsmanship and attitudes it was an hour of continual laughter.  At first the kids weren’t sure what to do.  For some of our students, this was the first experience playing in the snow.   Some of the local kids started jumping off the drift and our dorm kids joined in.

The snowball fight was the best!

We had to stop when Harry and Keira’s jeans were so soaking wet that they were shining in the sun.  A quick 3 mile drive back to the dorm got kids to warm showers, hot chocolate and a popcorn snack.
