Overview LCHS provides students with Google Workspace for Education accounts to support coursework, research, and collaborative learning. Under the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) and the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), schools must inform parents about how student data is collected, used, and protected within these digital platforms.

1. Services Provided

  • Core Services: Includes Google Classroom, Gmail, Drive, Docs, Sheets, Slides, Calendar, Meet, and Chrome Sync. Google processes data in Core Services strictly to deliver educational functionality.

  • Additional Services: Includes secondary Google applications (such as YouTube, Google Maps, and Google Earth) that teachers may enable solely for specific instructional activities.

2. Personal Information Collected

  • Account Details: Student name, school-assigned email address, password, grade level, and assigned organizational unit.

  • Usage & Content: Files stored in Drive, classroom assignment submissions, messages sent via Gmail/Chat, and interaction history within enabled apps.

  • Technical Details: IP address, device model, operating system type, browser configuration, and system crash reports.

3. Data Protection & Advertising Restrictions

  • No Targeted Ads: Google does not use student personal information from K-12 accounts to target advertisements in either Core or Additional Services.

  • Educational Use Only: Google processes student personal data exclusively to operate, maintain, and protect educational services.

  • Data Ownership: LCHS and its students retain complete ownership of all files and content created in their accounts.

4. School Administration & Data Sharing

  • Administrative Access: Designated LCHS staff maintain full administrative controls to inspect files, monitor activity, reset credentials, or suspend access in accordance with school policies.

  • Third-Party Restrictions: Google does not share personal data with external companies or individuals unless required by law, authorized by school administration, or needed in safety emergency situations.

5. Parent Rights & Choices

  • Account Control: Parents may inspect their child’s account activity, request account deletion, or ask the school to disable specific optional features by contacting the LCHS Technology Department.

  • Refusing Consent: Parents may decline consent for Google Workspace access. Note: Refusing consent may require teachers to assign alternative, non-digital learning materials for classwork.
